Hello again Readers,
It’s been too long since my last review of DC Animated films. Here are the next five animated films that DC released from 2006 to 2008. Not a whole lot of films came out during that year but there were strong films with strong storylines. Going forward I will just be posting reviews for every 5 DC Animated Films. Why 5? Because it’s my blog and 5 feels like a good number.
Superman: Brainiac Attacks (2006) 1hr 16m **
Starring: Tim Daly, Powers Boothe, Dana Delany
I had an issue with Powers Boothe’s rendition of Lex Luthor. It goes against what the animated series version of the character had been building up and presents Lex as a playboy semi genius instead of an evil genius that is one step ahead. The battle scenes felt stretched and long with no dialogue being shared between the two fighters.
Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo (2006) 1 hr 16m *****
Starring: Greg Cipes, Scott Menville, Tara Strong
This Teen Titans movie follows the same animation as when it premiered and before it turned more kid friendly. The story was good but felt stretched with scenes of the team exploring Tokyo and trying to develop a love interest between Robin and Star Fire. If I were to just look at the story and the pacing of the movie, it does land it in five star territory.
Superman / Doomsday (2007) 1 hr 18m ***
Starring: Adam Baldwin, James Marsters, Anne Heche
This was an exhausting movie. It tells two separate stories back-to-back and would serve better as two seperate films. It’s still a classic story they are telling with Superman dying in battle with Doomsday and Lex Luthor finding some scientific way to bring him back for his evil purposes. There are some minor plot holes and the battle against Doomsday felt lackluster. The movie has Doomsday in the title and yet felt only like the creature was only the metaphorical finger to push down the first dominio.
Batman: Gotham Knight (2008) 1hr 16m ****
Starring: Kevin Conroy, Jason Marsden, Crystal Scales
Such an interesting idea for a movie. All these different story lines with some of them overlapping but all happening between Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). The structure of each story adds to the mythology of the Batman with both the viewer and the citizens of Gotham. The only issue for me was the dialogue for each story, it wasn’t as solid as the story line. The different animations did keep my attention.
Justice League: The New Frontier (2008) 1hr 15m *****
Starring: David Boreanaz, Neil Patrick Harris, Lucy Lawless
This was an excellent period piece. This movie was set in the early 1950s at the tail end of the Korean war and racism is still strong in the community. All the DC heroes are active and when a hero dies due to racism, they disband the Justice League. The writing staff for this movie was top notch. They told individual stories for each hero at a great pace then collided them at the perfect time leading into the final battle.
